CHIMBORAZO BIKING

“MOUNTAIN BIKE FROM THE HIGHEST POINT IN ECUADOR AND ONE OF THE HIGHEST IN THE PLANET”

We offer 2 different routes to ride down from Chimborazo, the highest mountain in the country 6267 meters above sea level (20.000 feet). Both routes include hiking to Condor Cocha Lagoon at 5100 meters. There is a variety of terrain for cycling including dirt routes, some single-tracks and hidden routes only known by us, Inka ruins, indigenous communities, sight of vicuñas, alpacas, birds and more.

The tour begins from Riobamba, we pick you up at your hotel and drive you by 4WD to the first shelter (Carrel Brothers) 4850 meters. We take a hike from the first to the second shelter (Edward Whymper) 5030 meters, optional extra section to Condor Cocha Lagoon (5100 meters) 1h30 to 2 hours activity, then return to the first shelter and start biking downhill.

Chimborazo

Route 1

This route is designed for beginners; we Will take a relaxed ride downhill
and enjoy the flora and fruna in Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve.

  • Level: Easy
  • Distance: 31 km downhill, 9 km on dirt route and 22 km on pavement
  • Highest altitude: Carrel shelter 4850 meters
  • Lowest altitude: San Juan 3200 meters
  • Total time: 6 to 7 hours

 

Route 2

Exclusive route of Biking Spirit, you need to have good condition and mountain biking skills; we mostly ride on dirt roads, some uphills and single-tracks through dry paramo, moorlands, farming areas and local communities following the old Talagua route; the Inkas Fort, you will observe magnificent views of Chimborazo’s south face.

  • Level: Moderate
  • Distance: 34 km, 24 km on dirt route and 10 km on pavement
  • Uphill distance: 3 km approximated
  • Downhill distance: 28 km approximated
  • Highest altitude: Carrel shelter 4850 meters
  • Lowest altitude: San Juan 3200 meters
  • Total time: 7 to 8 hours
